Day 24
Listening to: All 80s weekend on the radio
Thought for the day: You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give. — Winston Churchill
This morning, I joined the community volunteer patriots to help out our dear friend Red Dean, a 92 year-old WWII veteran and former POW. Our mission? Clean up his yard and make minor repairs to the façade of his house. We came. We saw. We conquered………… and I stood around and talked to Red the entire time. Wait. No. That isn’t correct. I did trim one bush……. AND THEN I stood around and talked to Red the entire time. Still. I didn’t do much. When I left, I apologized for not being useful. One of the volunteer patriots smiled and said, “Keeping Red company while we worked was an important role.” Somehow, her words didn’t make me feel less guilty. It was not work to stand around and talk to Red. My time with him was priceless. He kept telling me no one has every helped him the way we (me included) helped him today.
